Good Friday is a fast and abstinence day.  On that day all Catholics, ages 14 (traditionally 7 yrs.) and up, must abstain from meat. All who are 18-59 must also fast. Fasting is considered only one full meal and two smaller meals in a day. The two smaller meals should together not be equal to a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but one may have beverages anytime. Catholics, ages 14 (traditionally 7 yrs.) and up, are also obliged to abstain from meat every Friday of Lent, and are encouraged strongly to abstain from meat every Friday of the year.  Traditionally, Catholics ages 21-59 yrs. did a 40-day fast (every day of Lent we fast, except Sundays).

The Blessing of Easter Baskets is a Cherished Catholic Tradition.  In many Eastern European countries, it’s a tradition to have a  basket of food (lamb, bread, lamb cakes, eggs and wine) blessed on Holy Saturday.  It has now been adopted by people of all ethnic backgrounds who enjoy this richly symbolic custom.  People take special pride in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket both lining the basket and covering the food which symbolizes the covering of Christ’s burial shroud. These covers are usually passed down from generation to generation. The basket could also be decorated with colorful ribbons and greenery to symbolize spring, renewal, and the Resurrection.  Some families with small children carry their own decorated basket filled with fruits, a chocolate bunny or some other treats Bring your decorative baskets on Easter to be blessed after Mass.  Some pre-made Easter baskets will be sold on Palm Sunday.

This Lent, we have an opportunity as a parish to engage in an important “Corporal Act of Mercy” by helping pregnant women in need.  In addition to our continued rosary campaign at Planned Parenthood during the “40 Days for Life” event, we are expanding our support for ending abortion.  We will be coordinating a Diaper Drive to help local pregnancy counseling centers who are assisting women who have made the choice for life by keeping their babies despite the tremendous pressure of pro-abortion advocates. The need for diapers is critical for poor women because while they do receive assistance to buy food, they cannot purchase diapers with food stamps and the cost per month for diapers can be up to $135 a month for each baby.  To support these life affirming pregnancy centers and the important work they do, we are asking for donations of: Diapers especially sizes 4, 5 and 6;  Baby hygiene products (wipes, bath products, lotion, etc.); New or gently used baby clothes especially for babies 18 to 24 months; New or gently used toddler clothes especially sizes 2T and 3T…..and any of the above in whatever size you may have to donate!

Please help support this effort by bringing donations to the church during Sunday Mass times or before 9:00 am during the week and they will be distributed weekly to our local pregnancy centers. Collections will begin this week and continue until Easter Sunday.  For more information, please contact Sr. Michaelanne Marie at sr.michaelanne-marie@fsspx.email
